Finding the church

The Clérigos complex stands at the top of the Rua dos Clérigos, the street that climbs from the Praça da Liberdade in the Baixa. The tower is the landmark: it can be seen from many points in the city, so on a first evening simply head for it. The church is the end with the ornate façade and the double staircase.

From São Bento or the Aliados

São Bento railway station sits in the historic centre, and the church is a short walk uphill from it. Follow the tower: once you reach the Rua dos Clérigos, the church is at the top.

The street itself

It took its present name around 1860, and by the mid-1800s it ranked among Porto's most important shopping streets. The tower at its top is the landmark to aim for.

When to arrive

The organiser asks visitors to be on site about 20 minutes before their session. That time lets you find the right door, show your ticket and choose a pew in the middle of the nave. Sessions run after dark and the start times vary by date, so check yours on the confirmation rather than relying on a time you saw elsewhere.

What to bring, and what not to

Bring your ticket and note the session time printed on your confirmation. Eating, drinking and smoking are all off limits inside. Photos and video are permitted without flash, as long as your screen is dimmed. In winter the church can feel cool, so a layer helps for half an hour of sitting still. If you plan to climb the tower on another day, note that backpacks and large bags are not allowed in the tower.

Pairing it with Lello

The Lello bookshop, a bookseller's since 1869 and in its present building since 1906, is the other famous interior in this corner of the Baixa. It needs its own ticket and keeps its own hours, so plan it for daylight. A guided walk of the old town that ends inside Lello, with a fast-track ticket, is one way to see it before an evening at the show.

Access

The show is wheelchair accessible. The organiser has an entrance suitable for people with reduced mobility and an access lift, and asks you to request it at the entrance. Wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs may prefer a drop-off at the church door to the walk up the Rua dos Clérigos. The tower, by contrast, is stairs only.

After the show

You come out into the old centre at night, with the tower above you. The Praça da Liberdade and the Aliados are close by, with São Bento station beyond them, so getting back to a hotel or a late dinner in the Baixa is simple on foot.

A short evening plan

A simple way to use the evening: walk through the Baixa from São Bento or the Aliados in daylight, look at the Clérigos façade and staircase from the street, and find your door. Take your seat in the nave about 20 minutes before the session. After the show, the Praça da Liberdade, which many people call the heart of Porto, is close by for a drink or dinner. Keep the tower for another day, in daylight, if you want the view as well.
